Is a Doctorate Right for You? Insights and Planning for International Students at the HU

Deciding whether or not to pursue a doctorate can be a tough decision and for those with an international background, there are additional questions and knowledge gaps that can make it even harder. You might be wondering how do I know if I am suitable, or if doctoral research is right for me academically, for my personality and for my current life situation?
Even if you are pretty sure this is the right path for you, you might sill be wondering what are the entry routes, what can I expect in the application process, what will my obligations and duties be once I start? Will language or cultural issues be a hurdle and if so, how can I prepare myself? Where do I start – how do I define my topic and methods and find a supervisor who is a good fit for me? How will I be financed, what are the pros/cons of different financing models, especially as an international? What do I need to have in place for a successful start?
We will take some time to do guided self-reflective activities which can help you in decision-making, interspersed with fact-filled inputs along with the opportunity to ask questions, gets tips and interact with peers in a similar position to yourself. This workshop is tailored specifically for the needs of international candidates.
